Random House Publishing Group 2002; € 14.52 Writers from Clive Barker to Bruce Sterling and Roger Zelazny have praised John Shirley?s searing, apocalyptic visions of postmodern hell on earth. While the first novel had her caught unawares with the death of her family, this novel finds her at her most mature ready to fight for what she believes in, despite all the odds being stacked against her. The breech isolates the shooters face from case rupture with two layers of 1.6 mm steel. There was television, but the world outside the window could have been the 1940s or the 1930s or even the 1900s, depending on which direction you looked.

The Event – The Buren Sound, Zurn Looks To The Sky, Scene 13, includes music by Jens & Per Kiilstofte. Good cyberpunk literature is good literature, period. Science fiction may make predictions about life in the future. As a long term trend, it’s more likely to survive underground than on the surface, but for the meantime fashion magazines are using the opportunity to come out with dark, edgy shoots, and back-alley cigarette-smoking fashionistas are rejoicing in the bold, sexy looks that PVC and patent pumps bring forth.

It was followed by hits like Beneath A Steel Sky (1994), BioForge (1995), System Shock 2 (1999), and Deus Ex (2000). I’ve always had a degree of impostor syndrome about being or calling myself an artist, but I’m pretty sure that there’s some way in which I’m an outsider, and what I’m doing has to be outsider art. Annual conference hosted by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, a scholarly organization "devoted to the study of the fantastic (broadly defined) as it appears in literature, film, and the other arts."

It’s grand stuff, though at times so grand that it can be a bit exhausting. At the theoretical level, it is easy to agree with planning theorists like Leonie Sandercock (1998, 2003), who argue for the cultural and intellectual creativity of ethnically diverse "mongrel" communities. But it was the first panel, featuring cyberpunk pioneers Rudy Rucker and Bruce Sterling, that really blew my mind. Two stories in particular highlight this theme. Heavily influenced by Western adventure games and cult science fiction movies, Hideo Kojima's early creation is one of the best cyberpunk video games out there.

More women have embraced the genre, for example, Justina Robson, with Silver Screen (1999), Mappa Mundi (2001), and Natural History (2003), Chris Moriarty with Spin State (2003) and Spin Control (2006) and Elizabeth Bear with her Jenny Casey trilogy, Hammered, Scardown, and Worldwired, all of which were published in 2005. Once upon a time, any work that included space flight qualified as sci-fi. An unusual piece that neatly emphasizes the variety and scope of cyberpunk writing and completely opposes some of Sterling’s manifesto statements.

Moses and the burning bush play prominently in the university's seal (see image at right). Beyond inconsistency and an overabundance of gadgetry in place of a good story, there are few taboos in science fiction. Almost universally, those stories were humorous and/or satirical, written in a breezy, fast-reading style. New Wave writers shared the notion that the world is not improving, expressed a distrust of science and technology, and thought humans unworthy of valorization.

Max Page (2005) has examined the repeated fictional destruction of New York and I have elsewhere considered the urban implications of atomic age apocalypse stories (Abbott 2006a), both with the goal of understanding the dimensions and character of American anti-urbanism. The space Western transposes themes of American Western books and films to a backdrop of futuristic space frontiers. What would that chemist be who said "I don't want to deal with this compound because it smells bad"?—which is not to admit that SF must smell bad.
